Abstract
This review seeks to enlighten the reader about the stressful and behavioral factors that affect the welfare of cattle intended for entertainment, specifically fighting. A broad search for technical and scientific information was carried out, in physical documents and digital databases, associated with the history, physiology, behavior, management and traditional practices carried out on the fighting bull. The exploration of literature showed, in the first place, that bullfighting is a controversial spectacle in the world and is based on the application of different moments (third of rods, third of flags and third of death) that generate situations of pain, anguish, fear and stress. At a physiological level, the latter is divided into two types: oxidative and metabolic. The first is a high level of free radicals due to increased oxidative activity at the cellular level and the second is the agglomeration of metabolic by-products due to muscle stress and wear. Additionally, an aversive agent stimulates the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis that results in the release of CRH (Corticotropin Releasing Hormone) and ACTH (Adenocorticotropic Hormone) promoting the release of glucocorticoids and catecholamines, these hormones being responsible for significantly altering homeostasis of organisms. Finally, it is concluded that bullfighting has a physiological impact and on the welfare of the animal. The physiological changes that occur bring with them health problems, in addition to the fact that when the bull suffers moments of stress and pain, his body reacts quickly, facing various stages that weaken him physically and mentally. The following license files are associated with this item:
