Evaluación de estereotipias en caballos del Rancho La Colmena, Veracruz, México.

Abstract

Durante la pasantía se abordó la problemática de las estereotipias en equinos y se sugirió estrategia, para reducir su prevalencia en el Rancho La Colmena, ubicado en Veracruz, México. Las estereotipias son conductas anormales repetitivas que pueden ser inducidas por frustración o disfunción del sistema nervioso central, y pueden ocasionar efectos negativos en la salud de los equinos, como pérdida de peso y compromiso de su capacidad atlética. Estos comportamientos representan un costo económico para los propietarios y afectan el bienestar de los animales. Por lo tanto, se plantea realizar una evaluación de las posibles estereotipias presentadas en los equinos del Rancho objeto de la pasantía, con miras a identificar, implementar de ser posible y dejar sugerencias sobre un manejo integral de las mismas; que considere los factores encontrados en la evaluación, y posibles causales involucradas en la aparición de las estereotipias, tomando en cuenta el entorno y las prácticas de crianza en el Rancho. La evaluación permitirá un análisis exhaustivo de la problemática, empleando escalas de evaluación para caracterizar las estereotipias en equinos, según investigaciones pertinentes reportadas y teniendo en cuenta, además, los factores ambientales y de manejo que puedan influir en su desarrollo. Con base en los resultados obtenidos, se diseñará un plan de intervención adaptado a las necesidades específicas del rancho. Se espera que esta iniciativa contribuya a mejorar la salud y el bienestar de los equinos, generando conocimiento valioso en el campo de las estereotipias equinas y ofreciendo beneficios tanto para los animales como para los propietarios y trabajadores del Rancho.

During the internship, the problem of equine stereotypes will be addressed, and some strategy will be suggested to reduce its prevalence at La Colmena Ranch, located in Veracruz, Mexico. Stereotypies are repetitive abnormal behaviors that can be induced by frustration or central nervous system dysfunction, and can cause negative health effects in equines, such as weight loss and compromised athleticism. These behaviors represent an economic cost for the owners and affect the welfare of the animals. Therefore, it is proposed to carry out an evaluation of the possible stereotypes presented in the equines of Ranch object of the internship, with a view to identifying, implementing if possible and leaving suggestions on an integral management of them; that considers the factors found in the evaluation, and possible causes involved in the appearance of stereotypes, taking into account the environment and the raising practices in Ranch. The evaluation will allow an exhaustive analysis of the problem, using evaluation scales to characterize stereotypes in equines, according to pertinent research reported and considering environmental and management factors that may influence their development. Based on the results obtained, an intervention plan adapted to the specific needs of the ranch will be designed. It is expected that this initiative will contribute to improving the health and well-being of equines, generating valuable knowledge in the field of equine stereotypes, and offering benefits for both the animals and the owners and workers of Ranch.
